![]() I have arranged for you to be taken to a finishing school in Scotland. ![]() “I am sure you understand," Father began, looking past Violet at the wall, "that I cannot allow you back into my house after what you have done. But we learned to wear the name with pride.” Weyward, they called us, when we would not submit, would not bend to their will. ![]() It was men who marked us so, in the time when language was but a shoot curling from the earth. We did not need stonemasons to carve our names into rock as proof we had existed.Īll we needed was to be returned to the wild. ![]() Instead, the Weyward bones rested in the woods, in the fells, where our flesh fed plants and flowers, where trees wrapped their roots around our skeletons. Our ancestors-the women who walked these paths before us, before there were words for who they were-did not lie in the barren soil of the churchyard, encased in rotting wood. Why the crows-the ones who carry the sign-watch over us and do our bidding, why their touch brings our abilities into sharpest relief. That is why roots and leaves yield so easily under our fingers, to form tonics that bring comfort and healing. The animals, the birds, the plants-they let us in, recognizing us as one of their own. We can feel it, she said, the same way we feel rage, sorrow, or joy. There was something about us-the Weyward women-that bonded us more tightly with the natural world. ![]() ![]() ![]() I gave this book four stars because it kept me interested, had an interesting plot, and created suspense. But, I think that if you do some research beforehand you will be able to understand the whole story. So I had to research all the Lords and their roles in Feudal Japan. For example, when the author was talking about all the Lords, it got confusing who was who. I think that in order to fully understand the book you must do some research. ![]() Erik Christian Haugaard did a good job of adding suspense however and portraying the time period, but, he left me confused at some points. This got me interested, wondering what was to come. In the beginning, the main characters parents were killed leaving him with nothing but a bamboo sword. I thought that "The Samurai's Tale" was a good book. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is nice to see a princess that can be a role model. I am certain that kids and their parents will enjoy this book. Once again this a terrifically written story with lots of witty dialogue and fun characters. ![]() I do wish Petra would stop being so understanding about the interruptions to her missions, just once frilly dresses would be a suitable punishment.:) ![]() Petra will have to make the decision to complete her mission or do the honorable thing. We meet more friends, including carpenters that don’t build with wood. A Painted House is the story of a young boy living in Arkansas in 1952. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The characters are so engrained with humanity that the author could go on indefinitely because the story could go on indefinitely. The story reminds me of my favorite book War and Peace. No matter what the story, you need humor. Tokarczuk creates a full, easily imaginable medieval world (the story starts in the 1700s).Īt a couple of points I laughed out loud and I immediately love an author that remembers to do that in a story. (I have heard that page numbers are either backwards or jumbled but with the ebook you don’t notice unless you look for it.) The person ahead of me either gave up early or decided to get a physical copy because I was able to pick it up earlier than I expected. I was able to find a copy at my library and check out the ebook. I jumped in and after spending 4 years with Miss Young and Miss MacIntosh this reading is engaging but also feels like a walk in the park. ![]() ![]()

I was looking for a story about the AT that didn't just talk about history of states or monuments ala Bill Bryson, whom I love, but really made me feel like I was walking the trail. We see the core group, with a few add ons (whom still, despite a large cast of characters, still have different aspects and add to the story without weighing it down with the same archetypes) growing closer as a family as they gain ever closer to their shared goal of Mt. The continuation, picked up in Keepin' On Keepin' On, shows the maturity in writing style and clarity that was missing from several moments of the first book. It had its issues, but told a good narrative. Hike Your Own Hike (book one) got us introduced to the main group of characters. ![]() |
